Invisible Ink
1998 son of Thunder Gulch
As a juvenile in training, Inky suffered a cut on his ankle, which was treated with antibiotics. He soon began to eat and drink less and less, and eventually developed colitis. Inky continued to degenerate physically, his body functions began to break down. He developed edema.

“You could barely tell where his head and body joined,” owner John Fort said. “His stomach area and testicles were the size of a beach ball. From the appearance of the throat and stomach, it was as if somebody had poured battery acid down this horse’s throat. It completely stripped the skin and ulcerated the horse’s stomach to the point where it hurt him so badly, he couldn’t swallow water. His whole insides were like raw meat. The poor thing couldn’t even pick his head up. He’d accumulate all this saliva and would drink that. The vets had never seen anything like it before. One thought was that someone mistakenly had given him a massive overdose of Bute, thinking they were helping him.”

Invisible Ink, weighing 900 pounds when admitted to the hospital, eventually deteriorated to around 500 pounds. His owners refused to give up on him, however, and he was treated on an hour-to-hour basis, being tube fed buttermilk to reintroduce bacteria into the colt’s stomach. Miraculously, he began to recover.
Saved from the drink of death, Invisible Ink went on to place in the 2001 Kentucky Derby behind Monarchos.
Inky entered stud at Rising Hill Farm in Florida in 2003. In 2011, he was moved to Pin Oak Lane, where he died of a neurological disorder at the age of 13.
